Description

Records are shipped in a cardboard record box with the record placed in a plastic sleeve outside the cover & fragile labels on the front & back of the box Goldmine Grades for vinyl: Mint: new, un-played, perfect, usually sealed. Near Mint: like new but possibly carefully played a limited amount of times. LP should play near perfect with almost no noise or imperfections. It may show very faint imperfections from paper scuffs or tiny needle marks. Excellent: as above with a few light needle marks, or a few light surface scuffs, and/or lightly audible marks. A very nice used record. Very Good +: between VG and EX, no feelable scratches & will play through with no skips or jumps. Very Good: still showing gloss but lots of small scratches and scuffs or some light groove wear. A used/played record that will still play through without skips but will have light surface noise throughout, pops, ticks, and some light distortion. Good: any record in less than VG condition that is still worth offering due to it’s rarity. Goldmine Grades for covers: Mint: perfect. No wear, square flat corners, solid seams, spine etc., Usually sealed Near Mint: overall appearance of front & back near perfect, but may have a very small problem such as a small corner ding/couple tiny spine chips, but nothing noticeable without close inspection. Excellent: as above, nice un-handled feel, but may have spine wear, a bent or dinged corner or two, very light ring wear, but rarely any splits or tears. Very Good +: Between VG & EX (usually closer to an EX grade), no major seem splits over an inch or two, no visible water damage. edge chipping and smaller splits possible, ring wear, and small name or writing possible. Very Good: still has a nice overall appearance, but may have the following defects: seam splits, spine splits, small tears, ring wear, writing, stains, water damage, stickers etc. in various degrees. Good: getting ugly, but still worth offering. DS

This LP was the last of the three that Jim Croce recorded for ABC/Dunhill, released after his death in a September 1973 plane crash. Although the title song and two others were not written by Jim, this album showcases his always improving songwriting and singing skills. The songs "I Got A Name", "Thursday" (written by Jim''s friend Joe Salviuolo aka Sal Joseph), and "Salon and Saloon" (written by Jim''s close friend and lead guitarist Maury Muehleisen, who also died in the plane crash) are all different from his usual style. This is especially true of "Salon and Saloon", featuring Jim''s rich, emotional voice backed only by a single piano, a real departure for him.

Of Jim''s own compositions, highlights include the lovely, deceptively simple "I''ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song", sung in his warm baritone with aching tenderness; the more sophisticated and sadly beautiful "Lover''s Cross"; and, fittingly, the last song on the album, "The Hard Way Every Time". It''s a man looking back on his life, acknowledging mistakes, remembering falls he has taken and things he learned the hard way, yet saying he "..wouldn''t ''ve done it any other way." The words seem to come from a much older man than 30-year-old Jim Croce, wise beyond his years. It''s a bittersweet ending for the album and the man, and we''re left wanting more, much more.

Here, at long last, Croce''s final and best album on CD!

It''s taken way, way too long for this album to appear on CD in the U.S. That changes now. Rhino has brought one of the best albums of the 70''s back into the light, finally. "I Got a Name" is by far Jim Croce''s best album. Alternately triumphant, wandering, heartbreaking, and humorous, the entire record begs the question, "How could Rolling Stone leave this off their 500 greatest albums list?!".

Some of Croce''s best known songs are here: The incredible title track (which should be familiar to even the most casual fan or classic rock listeners in general), the heartbreaking "Lover''s Cross", the beautiful "I''ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" (another one that, odds are, you''ve heard) and the fun "Workin'' at the Car Wash Blues", as well as the ''familiar but not THAT well-known'' "Salon and Saloon" and "Thursday". These songs alone are worth the price of the disc, but it''s the less famous songs here that elevate this album from "great" to "masterpiece".

Given Croce''s death in a plane crash so close to the album''s release, an eerie air hangs over some of the tracks here: The title track, sure, but also "Age", which details roads not taken and love ignored in favor of material pursuits, is simply outstanding, easily my favorite Croce song. That eerie air hangs even heavier over the closing track, "The Hard Way Every Time", a song that details roads that ARE traveled, and how those life experiences shape us. In light of the events that transpired right before it''s release, the final line, in which Croce concludes that "I wouldn''t have done it any other way" is simply incredible.

The humourous songs are here, too. The aforementioned "...Blues", but also "Top Hat Bar and Grille" and the surprisingly dark "Five Short Minutes", which, despite it''s boppy tune, is about an older man taking an underage girl to bed and subsequently being arrested and imprisoned for 20 years.

There''s not a bad track here, every song is just superb, and it all flows wonderfully. Sure, many of the songs are available in various compilations, but there''s nothing quite like hearing the album the way it was meant to be heard. And that album art, classic. That sepia-tinted shot of Croce smoking with that all-too-1973 font the title is printed in, just great.

Not much left to say, this is one that''s well worth the purchase!

I still have this album on vinyl. I''m very pleased to have it on CD. "I Got a Name" is a great album, and the last studio album from the late, great Jim Croce. For years, I''ve only found compilations of Jim''s recordings. It''s nice to have the whole album.
